ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network. It is generally regarded as the next step up from modems in terms of connection speed to the internet. ISDN works over existing telephone lines by dividing the copper wire into 3 pieces - 2 B channels and a D channel. Each B channel is capable of transmitting 56k/s or 64k/s or voice, while the D channel can transmit 16k/s. Generally the D channel cannot be used for data, because it takes care of the "overhead" or administrative part of a call, like connecting and disconnecting etc. With that in mind, we can see that the top speed of an ISDN line is 128k/s in both directions, if you bind both B channels together. This is considerably faster than a 56K modem.
